ROBERT HOLDEN Studies from Life

"Many things are so beautiful and so keenly felt when the light is right that I want to paint them just the way they are. I am encouraged to persevere in this quest by the example of past generations of artists whose works are so true to life and so compelling."

Robert Holden has been painting and drawing since 1978 when he left the field of journalism to study for two years at the Art Students League of New York. He studied with painters who embodied the traditions of the League, an artist-run institution which was founded in 1875 and whose first teachers had studied academic realism in France or Germany in the late 19th Century and had joined in the outdoor work of the Realists or the Impressionists. Holden continues to seek inspiration from the artists of that period and their immediate descendants who discovered ways to capture a palpable sense of the “real thing” on canvas through direct observation of nature.

Out of the Studio

Holden is a native of Sherburn, MN. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, graduating with a degree in journalism and a minor in studio art. The abstract painting being taught at the time was of only passing interest to him so he found work as a news reporter and editor for several regional publications and The Associated Press in New York City before beginning his art studies in earnest.

In addition to selling paintings through various galleries over the years, many paintings and drawings by the artist have been acquired privately by collectors in the United States and abroad. Early in his painting career he entered a few juried art competitions and won first-prize at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit in 1983 and third prize for a self portrait in the 1989 portrait competition sponsored by The Artist’s Magazine.
